Nine Behaviors of Highly Unsuccessful People

By Tristan Loo
During my tour of duty as a police officer, I’ve had the unique experience of having dealt with highly unsuccessful people and I’ve always focused on comparing and contrasting these unsuccessful people with those people who are highly successful. The result of my research has yielded nine of the key behavior traits that I believe to be the most influential in holding people back from their dreams in life. This list should be studied by those people who desire happiness and life success because by knowing and identifying these unsuccessful behaviors that prevent dreams from being realized, we can better eliminate and prevent these behaviors from entering our lives.

Unsuccessful Behavior #1: Greed and Instant Gratification
Nearly all of the highly unsuccessful people out there that I've dealt with on the streets exhibited short-term thinking, meaning that they base all of their decisions on what they want right now with careless disregard on how their decisions will impact their future. They almost always give in to instant gratification and can’t think about the future implications and ramification of the decisions that they make right now. Remember that we as human beings automatically default our decision-making processes to our emotional minds and then we try to justify those emotion-based decisions with one-sided logic. That’s our animal programming at work. Just as a mouse is lured by a piece of cheese, we as human being can be lured away from sensible judgment by material possessions, sex and power that is waved in front of our faces. The highly unsuccessful people give in to their emotional minds and give into instant gratification. The highly successful people out there, on the other hand, have the self-restraint to pull themselves back, switch their decision-making process back to their logical mind and weigh the cost versus rewards of the decisions that they are about to make before they actually make them.

Greed and selfishness are parasitic behaviors that drain the life force from other people around you. Greed also prevents personal growth from taking place. The behavior of greed can be described as wanting something from others without the intention of exchanging something of like value in return. Greed also acts like a cancer that spreads and grows bigger, infecting more and more of your personality until you become wholly consumed by this cancer. No amount of power or desires can ever satisfy the hunger of greed because it always wants more. This insatiable appetite that greed has is the reason why it destroys relationships, both personal and professional. The root cause behind greed is a grossly underdeveloped level of self-esteem, which always urns to possess and to control because it’s filled with insecurities.

Highly successful people realize that living within one’s means is more important than putting on a false image. They also realize that if they provide genuine value to other people, then abundance will flow to them in exponential magnitude over time. The highly successful people who are happy with their lives are outrageously philanthropic and devote a large chunk of their time and money to help others in need. By helping other people, you will find that positive things will come your way when you provide value for others instead of trying to deprive others of their value.

Unsuccessful Behavior #2: A Lack of Definite Purpose in Life
Another key trait that I’ve noticed from most of the unsuccessful people that I’ve dealt with as a police officer is that highly unsuccessful people lack a major definite purpose in life. Having a life purpose is important because it’s the foundation from which all your goals and your daily tasks sprout from. A major definite purpose gives you the focus you need to create a lasting legacy that people will remember for generations. Most of all, a purpose in life fuels your desire to achieve what your heart truly desires. People with highly focused life purpose statements are the ones who are able to defy impossible odds and inspire thousands, if not millions of people with their stories of heroism in the face of adversity.

A person without a definite purpose in life ends up becoming a wandering generality. They go here and there with their lives, but they never reach any meaningful destination.

Unsuccessful Behavior #3: Lacking Confidence in Yourself
People who lack confidence in their abilities simply get by life without ever engaging life at 100% of their potential. They neither take a stand, nor do they show any courage in the face of adversity. They conform to what everyone else is doing in order to be accepted by their peers. Those who do not possess the confidence to take a stand are like cows in a herd being led off to the slaughterhouse. Realize that whatever stand you take throughout your life, there will always be people who support your views and there will be people who oppose your views. You can’t please everyone in life, so please the one person who is the most important in your life—yourself.
A person who lacks confidence is not willing to make mistakes and consequently cannot gain the valuable experience that those mistakes can teach them. The end result is that the highly unsuccessful people who lack confidence typically end up making the mistake later in their lives and because they never learned from it in the first place, that mistake can be catastrophic for their lives.

A lack of confidence goes hand in hand with poor self esteem. A lack of self esteem simply means that you do not value or respect your own self worth. This results in behaviors that are counterproductive towards personal growth and life success. Anger, procrastination, and self-depreciating comments are all signs of a lack of self-esteem.

Unsuccessful Behavior #4: Not Willing to Pay the Price for Your Dreams
Success in life not only requires that you know what you want, but perhaps even more so, it requires that you know the sacrifices you have to make in order to reach that success. Success in any aspect of our lives comes at a price and we must pay this price in order to achieve that success. Unwillingness to pay the full price of the success that you want will assuredly prevent you from obtaining that success. In the grand scope of things, you can’t cheat your way to the top. You can’t take shortcuts and expect to create any long-term success. If you want to be an Olympic athlete, you have to put in the time—you have to have the dedication and the perseverance and the drive to win. No amount of intention-manifestation will enable you to get what you want unless you are willing to give up the things that are necessary for you to obtain it.
It’s important not to confuse focused discipline with movement. A person can be the most busy person in the world and still not achieve anything meaningful for their lives. Getting what you want in life comes when you know exactly what you have to give up in order to get it and committing yourself to giving up specifically those things, whether it be time, effort, or money.

Most of the time, it’s not the pain of paying the price in order to get what we want that is the problem. It’s with the consistency of making those payments a habit. Most people will pay up for the first couple of days and then slowly slack off until they eventually give up on making the payments that they need to realize their dreams. If you make those payments an absolute habit, then you can avoid adopting this trait of highly unsuccessful people.

Unsuccessful Behavior #5: Giving Up Without a Fight
Lack of persistence is a big distinguishing behavior between those who consistently achieve success in areas of their life versus people who often fail to realize their goals. When pressure builds and problems seem to stack on top of each other, quitting is the easy way out. There is a big distinction we must make however between quitting and failing. Failing in life is a perfectly acceptable thing. We all fail at some point in our lives and chances are that we will fail yet again. But if we try our best and fail, then that is courageous and there are no regrets because we have the peace of mind of knowing that we did everything in our power to try to reach that goal. Failing is part of the journey towards success. Quitting on the other hand is much worst than failing. Quitting is not using your fullest potential to reach those goals. This is very disempowering because not only will you not reach your success, but always in the back of your mind, you will wonder if that success could have been possible had you given it one-hundred percent. As my former gymnastics mentor and 1984 Olympic gold medallist, Peter Vidmar, once said, “Getting to the Olympics was simple. I just trained when I felt like it and I trained when I didn’t.”

Unsuccessful Behavior #6: Not Willing to Take Calculated Risks
Getting ahead in life and reaching success involves taking calculated risks. That does not mean you have to be irresponsible however. Risk taking, as it applies to success, means that you have to be willing to step outside your comfort zone so that you can effectively expand your box and grow. When I was competing as a gymnast, I used to perform acrobatic stunts that had the potential of seriously injuring myself or even killing me. But I never considered those stunts to be irresponsible risks because my knowledge, training, and competency gave me the confidence to push myself further and try things that I knew I had the ability to do. I believe that great opportunities come into our lives daily, but it’s our indecision or fear that prevents us from taking hold of those opportunities. Be willing to step outside your comfort zone and seize those opportunities when they appear.

The amazing thing about fear in this day and age is that almost 90% of all our fears are imaginary and not physical. In caveman days, our ancestors had some real threats to worry about, such as war parties, predatory animals, and the harsh environment. Today, most of us don’t have to worry about physical injury, but fear has never been so great. Our fear makes us a prisoner in our own minds, preventing us to ever experience the joys of freedom. Fear causes anxiety which can lead to paralysis. Today more than ever before do we see people fail before ever giving their abilities a chance to perform.

Highly successful people are willing to take calculated risks. This is not to say that they are reckless, but rather that they are willing to step outside their comfort zones, knowing full well that there is a chance to fail, but also realizing that this is an opportunity to expand their comfort box.

Unsuccessful Behavior #7: Not Taking Action
Waiting for the perfect moment is a big killer of success in our lives. If we don’t have to do it, then chances are we won’t do it, but it’s this lack of action which erodes our chances of success early on. Realize that there will never be a perfect time to implement an action and the longer we wait to act, the less likely we are to do it. We all know how to fill up our time with busywork, but not all of us know how to prioritize those tasks that are important. The Pareto Principle states that 80% of our results will come from only 20% of the actions that we do. People who procrastinate instead focus on the other tasks that are of little importance, while delaying their action on those high-value tasks that will produce the most change in their lives. Remember the adage, “Don’t wait for tomorrow what you can do today.”

Unsuccessful Behavior #8: Not Taking Responsibility
Failures and mistakes are a natural part of the learning process and a crucial part in building any real success for yourself, but you must be willing to extract the lessons from each failure and apply it towards your future in order for it to be effective. Those people who ignore the lessons to be learned in their failures are doomed to fail again, and again, and again throughout their lives. Successful people, on the other hand, not only learn from their own mistakes, but they seek out other people and learn from their mistakes as well. They use history as a powerful leverage tool for their success so that they don’t have to recreate the wheel.

Highly unsuccessful people love to blame, complain and make excuses. The reason why they do this is because it defaults them to the role of the victim and they get sympathy points from others, but in doing so, they also give away all their power and their control over their own lives and instead they hand their future over to the rough hands of fate to do what it wants with it. Unfortunately this behavior is self-perpetuating because the more these people blame, complain and make excuses, the more bad things, people and events they attract into their own lives via the Law of Attraction. Not taking responsibility for your own life is a definite lose-lose behavior for you and those close to you.

Unsuccessful Behavior #9: Negative Thinking
The law of attraction states that we attract into our lives whatever we focus on, regardless if it’s what we want or not. So if you harbor negative feelings and negative thoughts about yourself or your environment, then regardless whether you or your environment are good or bad, the reality that you will attract into your life will be a negative one. Conversely, if you flood your mind with positive thoughts and good emotions, then you will inevitably attract positive things and positive people into your life as a result. Therefore, it’s important to make a conscious decision to eliminate negative self-talk from your daily life and replace it with rich, nourishing, positive affirmations that support you and your goals.

What Do YOU Stand For? …In One Sentence

By Tristan J. Loo

“There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.”
Peter Drucker

A fellow coaching professional came to me because his publicity and marketing efforts were not producing the results that he wanted. He was sending hundreds of press releases out by fax to various media channels and he was getting virtually no response back. I asked to take a look at his press release and he handed me five pages full of single-spaced type! Well, any media-savvy person knows that a reporter is not going to read through five pages worth of material. A press release needs to be short and sweet and most importantly, it needs to get to the point. Although my friend’s press release was well-written, all of what he had to say in those five pages could really be summed up with one sentence, “If you have a dream, I’ll make sure you reach it.” I let him know that he needs to be able to tell people what service he offers in one sentence otherwise he doesn’t know how to really explain it at all. Well, my friend went back and crafted a wonderful one page press release with a catchy headline and he landed several interviews out of that effort.

This got me to thinking about life purpose and our legacy in life. Can we as individuals really condense what we truly stand for in one sentence? The answer is that we can and we should clarify who we are and our life purpose in one powerful and clear sentence.

Marketing Principles for Life
When a company hires a marketing consultant to redefine their image, the first thing that the marketing consultant might ask them is, “In one sentence, tell me what your business does.” This is a particularly useful tool for them because if the business owner can’t give the consultant a clear definition of what they offer in one sentence, then it’s probably too vague or unclear for any of their potential customers to really understand either. We can apply this same tool when trying to craft our life purpose statement. You’re life purpose needs to be crystal clear in order for you to understand what your legacy is and there is no better way of clarifying your life purpose than to use the same techniques that master copywriters use to create a compelling and persuasion piece of marketing.

Short and Sweet is the Key
Copywriters have long known that a great headline that grabs and captivates its readers does far better than a vague and boring headline. Not all copywriters, but most of them, stick to the short and sweet principle of designing headlines. They want impact and punch because that draws the readers in. Likewise, you should craft your life purpose statement as a single powerful sentence. The real test of your one sentence life purpose statement is when you read it to a stranger, will they say, “Aaahhh, I understand,” or will they say, “Huhhh? I don’t get it.” Your one sentence purpose needs to convey who you are and what you’re all about. If you need more than one sentence to sum up your life purpose, then you need to rework it until it is more clear in your mind.

What Will People Say About You When You’re Gone for Good?
Now I don’t want to get into a morbid topic, but the reality of life is of course death and how you will be remembered by others is what is known as your LEGACY. Our goal should be to strive to create a legacy for ourselves that will inspire people for generations to come. So a useful tool for this is to brainstorm with the end result in mind. Yes, I mean imagine that you are dead and attending your own funeral ceremony. What will people say about you? How will you be remembered? Putting yourself in this mindset will better aid you in designing your life purpose statement.

Boil it Down to Its Essence
In cooking terminology, the word REDUCE or REDUCTION refers to taking a liquid mixture and evaporating away the water content by boiling it down until the essence of what ever was in it is concentrated. Although there is less inside the pot in terms of volume than there was before, the small amount of essence left in the pot is really powerful. The same is true with your life purpose statement. I encourage you to think on paper and let you ideas flow out about who you are, what your values are, what you will be remembered for, and what you stand for and don’t be worried about how long it is. Just get the material on paper. Then once you have all that material, treat it just like a chef who is making a reduction and boil it down to it’s essence. Start getting rid of filler words. Trim off weak sentences. Concentrate long sentences into only a couple of words. Start shaving that writing down until you are left with only the essence of what you wrote about yourself. This is a great way to start off writing your one sentence life purpose statement.

Living Your Purpose - Create the Life You Want by Living Your Life Today!

By Tristan J. Loo

“Circumstance does not make a man, it reveals him.”
-James Allen, Author of As a Man Thinketh

Your major definite purpose is a path you follow during your journey through life. It is your one major goal that defines who you are and what you are all about – the essence of who you are as a person. Your life purpose is by it’s very nature something that you are very passionate about, something that gets your juices flowing at the mere thought of pursuing it. It’s what drives and motivates you to perform all the actions that you do each and every day of your life despite the adversity, and even the pain that you might have to endure in order to do so.

A life of passion and significance requires knowing your definite purpose. Think of all the monumental figures throughout history. What was their decided purpose in life? You will find that the great ones believed in their purpose so passionately that some of them even died in the pursuit of living it. Defining and living this purpose brings an overwhelming sense of fulfillment and meaning to your existence by providing you with a way to direct your values and passions towards a meaningful objective. Once you know what your purpose in life is, you will be able to wake up each morning knowing that every action that you take that day will move you one step closer towards achieving it. You will be living life passionately, focused in on your legacy, and the talents and passions that are going to get you there.

Are we Born With a Purpose?
If there ever was a controversial question this would be one of them. Are we encoded, either genetically or divinely, to fulfill a given destiny? Or is our fate, truly, what we make for ourselves? All of us have DNA and fingerprints. DNA is just made up of four nucleic acids: adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine. Fingerprints are simply the natural ridge patterns on our fingers that gives us the frictional power to grip things without letting them slip. Yet each one of us has a unique set of DNA and fingerprints that can be used to distinguish us. It’s not a question of whether or not we have DNA or fingerprints, it’s how our DNA and fingerprints are uniquely structured that makes us different and wonderful human beings. In a sense, your life purpose is no different.

Everyone has their own unique set of values. Everyone is born with certain things that they excel at, known as talents. Everyone is born with certain things that they love to do, known as passions. Everyone seems to possess a unique desire to leave a legacy. Therefore, the question is not whether we have a major definite purpose, but rather, how our unique passions, talents, and drive to contribute to humanity combine to create a unique life purpose we can call our own.

Not Quite Living my Purpose
When I was growing up I was a big fan of basketball legend Michael Jordan. This was at the time when his Air Jordan shoes were huge with school kids and even though they were expensive I begged my parents to get them for me. I decided back then that I was going to be the next Michael Jordan and be a basketball superstar just like him. Well, I was a pint-sized Asian-American kid about the size of a twig and with about the same amount of athletic talent as one. I went off to basketball camp that summer and got a quick dose of reality. Unless I grew about three and a half feet taller I’d have a pretty difficult time blocking shots and making slam dunks. I loved basketball, but the talent and the ability was not there. It was difficult for me to realize that my basketball superstar dreams were perhaps out of my reach. My parents saw my determination and knew it could be used to propel me forward in other areas where I was naturally gifted, so they enrolled me in martial arts and gymnastics. I excelled in both sports at the international level. The fact that my parents recognized my talent in gymnastics is primarily what was responsible for me getting a scholarship into a top-notch university and getting me a college degree. I was also able to compete with the some of the best gymnasts in the world and live my dream of being right there at their level.

What’s the Point of What You Do?
Have you ever stopped to think about why you are doing what you are doing? Why did you get out of bed today? Why did you go to work or to school? Why are you reading this book? Behind every action and decision that you make for yourself is a reason. If there was no reason behind our daily actions we would wander aimlessly, like zombies. Without a higher-level reason we would become lazy and unmotivated to do anything significant.

During my time as a street cop I came into contact with many people who had no purpose in their lives. They lived day to day and could care less about their actions and the consequences of their actions. They never took any positive actions for themselves because there was no higher meaning, no purpose, that their activities were a part of. These people were the ones who I gave frequent rides to county jail every week in my patrol car because they had no goals or direction. However, every once in a while there were those special few who I took to jail that finally realized their purpose in life. That was a magical moment for them because once they got out of jail, they gave up all the drugs and old “friends” who were not congruent with their new purpose in life. In essence, they rebuilt themselves into an entirely different person. While I don’t expect you to do time at county jail before you realize your life purpose, I do want you to realize that having a life purpose has the power to make a drug addict kick their habit and institute positive and meaningful changes in their life to reverse all the damaging effects of their past. Just imagine what having a life purpose can do for you.

Engineered for a Purpose
Imagine a hammer – one of the most ancient tools. The engineers who designed the hammer crafted it with the purpose of pounding nails. It’s the best implement in the toolbox for that type of work. Let’s imagine that a hammer has a soul, with emotions and feelings. Imagine if that hammer is left in the toolbox unused. Imagine how it would feel if the owner grabbed the screwdriver to pound in a nail instead of the hammer. That hammer can do other things, but the thing that it wants to do more than anything is pound nails. Like the hammer, all of us are designed with a unique blend of values, passions and talents which make us uniquely suited to contribute to humanity, just as the hammer contributes to the construction job by pounding nails. Now, a hammer can serve different purposes in different hands. It can be used to kill and destroy, or it can be used to create. Like the hammer, you too can be an instrument of destruction or an instrument of creation. The choice is yours. Unlike a hammer, your life purpose isn’t automatically clear to you. It’s your responsibility to figure out what passions and talents you have been gifted with, and then figure out how best to use those passions and talents to create something amazing.

A Quick Test to See if You’re Living Your Purpose
Here’s a very quick and simple test to see whether or not you are living your purpose yet. Ask yourself if you get stressed out each day. Do you find yourself handling crisis after crisis and seem never to get ahead? If your answer is YES, then you are not yet living your purpose. People who are living their purpose live mostly stress-free lives. They rarely blame the world for their problems, ceaselessly complain, or are continually miserable. People who are focused on their purpose discover significance in their daily activities.

The Law of Attraction
The Law of Attraction states that you manifest into your life the things, people, and events you think about the most. Your major definite purpose in life works hand-in-hand with the Law of Attraction because the more you begin to clarify, and begin to live your major definite purpose in life, the more you will begin to attract all the things, people, places and events that will help you in your journey.
Belief is a primary ingredient in the Law of Attraction. No matter how many times you repeat an affirmation or visualize something that you want, if you don’t believe that it is possible, you won’t attract it. For example, a poor person might focus a lot of their attention on money, in fact, they may be obsessed with it. If their internal belief is that they will always be poor and that wealth is out of their reach, then they will only manifest scarcity. Without belief, there cannot be any attraction. That’s where values become part of the equation.

Your values play a crucial part with the Law of Attraction because your values determine what you believe about yourself, your abilities, and the world around you. Once you understand what your values are you will begin to attract things and people that are congruent with those values.

Life Purpose as the Basis for all Goal-Setting
I try not to approach the issue of life purpose from a spiritual aspect because that’s not what I’m good at doing. I approach it from a functional, goal-setting approach. Having a life purpose is the foundation from which all of your decisions and goals are born. It’s simply pointless to design a goal without knowing with full clarity what your life purpose is. It would be like shooting arrows at a target you can’t see! Creating a goal that’s not aligned with your life purpose may leave you feeling unhappy and unfulfilled even if you successfully accomplish it.

Many people set and accomplish goals for themselves which are not aligned with their true passions. One of my close friends graduated from UCLA Medical School at the top of his class and went on to become a cardiologist. By most standards he was successful. The problem was that he never really wanted to be a physician in the first place. He was pressured into adopting a career his parents wanted for him, but that he did not want for himself. As a result he was acutely dissatisfied. After several coaching sessions my friend eventually gave up his medical license, quit his job as a cardiologist, and pursued his real passion, cooking. He’s now a very successful chef and has never been happier. My friend’s goal was to become a physician. He was successful, but his life purpose, his passion, existed elsewhere. Therefore, in order to find his happiness in life it was necessary for him to retrace his steps and design goals that were congruent to his life purpose.

Don’t Confuse Purpose With Achievement
Purpose is different from achievement. You can be successful at achieving a particular goal, but unless that goal is aligned with your purpose in life, it won’t make you fulfilled and happy. For instance, I could be successful at robbing a bank and getting away clean. That goal hurts people instead of helping them, so it’s in direct opposition to my purpose in life. Hence, even the achievement of that goal won’t bring me any sense of happiness or fulfillment. In fact, achievement is not a necessary part of living your purpose because there is nothing specific that you need to achieve in order to feel happy doing the things you feel most passionate about. When you are on purpose you are feeding yourself continual and daily motivation that makes you ecstatic about living and staying on that path.

Understanding Precessional Effects
The famous philosopher Buckminster Fuller once said, “Precession is the effect of a body in motion with other bodies in motion.” Precessional effects are the side effects of the actions that we take in life. For example, a honey bee travels from flower to flower to collect nectar to make honey, but in doing so, it cross-pollinates flowers which allows more plants to grow and in turn those plants release oxygen that helps keep most living things on this planet alive. Simple bee, simple task, important precessional effect. Fuller believed that all of us have similar precessional effects occuring in our lives. He believed that our true purpose in life works at 90 degree angles to our goals, just as the ripples in a pond are at 90 degrees to the pebble that is dropped into that pond. Fuller believed that if you pursue your goals and happiness in life, with the good of humanity in mind, then your precessional effects could be so profound that it helps support and nurture the entire world, just like the honey bee.

Why Do Some People Experience a Mid-Life Crisis?
If we don’t clearly define our purpose early in our adult life it eventually hits most of us at some point somewhere between the ages of thirty-five and fifty: the infamous mid-life crisis. This “crisis” almost always comes from an inner voice telling us that something is missing from our lives. That feeling is the need to find and pursue our major definite purpose in life. It’s our subconscious mind saying, “Hey, you’re at the halfway point already. Why don’t you stop wasting time and start doing what you are supposed to be doing!” Why wait for your subconscious alarm clock to go off like that? Start working on it right now.

Take the Shrink Wrap Off Your Internal GPS Unit!
In my experience as a Life Success Coach, I’d venture to guess that roughly 80% or more of the people I’ve encountered don’t have a clue as to what their life purpose is, and of the remaining 20% only 3% are actually living it! Those people who don’t know what their life purpose is have been branded “wandering generalities,” bouncing from here to there, but never reaching the destination that will bring them happiness and success.

The fortunate thing is that all of us come prepackaged with a genetically-installed GPS unit that can help guide us to exactly where we want to go in our lives. This GPS system is guided by our feelings of inner joy and happiness. When we are feeling our greatest happiness and joy, we are following the straightest path towards our purpose in life. Conversely, when we are harboring negative feelings and emotions, we are the farthest away from that purpose.

So how do we activate our internal GPS unit? First, take out a sheet of paper and write down ten times in your life when you have experienced the greatest amount of happiness and joy. Take a look at that list and analyze what you were doing that produced that level of happiness. What are the common elements that run through your list? Once you figure that out you’ll be able to hone in on the things that you are passionate about.

The Worrier’s Guidelines to Eliminate Worrying

By Tina B. Tessina, Ph.D.

What we usually call worry is a continuous thought that keeps interrupting your mode of thought and that you find it hard to get away from. If it’s continuous and not focused on any one thing, we tend to call it anxiety. Worry drains and wastes your energy and makes you less likely to make good decisions. If you take that same energy you’re using running around in mental circles, and you do something productive with it, it’ll serve you better.

Late Night worry. Get out of the habit of using your brain as a memo pad. The best sleep aid I know is a pencil and paper by your bed to write down whatever is bugging you. If you’re worried about forgetting something, write it down. If you’re anxious about something you have to do, organize it with a written plan or checklist.

”What if” Worry. Fretting about what might happen? Figure out what you would do in case the hypothetical disaster occurs. Answer the “what if” question, factually. “What if I forget, Susie’s, Dr. Appointment?” Answer: “I’ve got a lot to do. I’ll start carrying a calendar with everything marked on it.”

Endless Replay Worry. If you regret something you said or something that happened, then figure out how you could handle that situation better next time. Practice it over and over until you feel confident you know what you’re doing. Obsessive thinking is common. If it’s interfering with your ability to function, get help. If obsessive thinking keeps you from leaving the house or working productively, or if you’re sleeping all the time, or not sleeping well, or it’s disrupting your relationships, then consult a trained therapist. As emotional problems go, obsessive thinking is simple to fix.

I often find myself worrying about a future I can’t predict, or things I haven’t done. Worry saps energy, and accomplishes nothing, so I’ve developed a method of dealing with worry that you might find helpful, especially when if you cant sleep or if you’re anxious. Whenever you’re worried, follow these simple steps:

This exercise is especially effective when you can’t sleep or when you experience anxiety attacks. If you worry a lot, or obsessively think about future events and problems, when you should be concentrating on other things, follow these simple steps:

1. Write it down.
If you’re feeling anxious or worried, or you can’t stop thinking about some event that hasn’t happened yet, take a few moments to write down whatever is worrying you. If you can’t write it down, think it through carefully until you can clearly say what you’re worrying about. Clarifying your worries will stop the free-floating sensation of anxiety with no basis.

2. Evaluate.
Think about the first item on your list. Ask yourself “Is there anything I can do about it now?” If you’re at home and worrying about the office, or if the problem won’t occur until next week or next year, you may not be able to do anything about it right now. Or, you may be worrying about a problem you can do something about, such as calling someone, or getting an estimate of costs, or making a doctor’s appointment to check out a worrisome symptom.

3. Do Something.
If there is something you can do, do it. Sometimes, worry is a way to procrastinate. Often, worry is a way to keep a mental list going, as in “I’m worried that I’ll forget to bring the slides for the presentation tomorrow.”

If you’re worried that you may be fired, update your resume and call some agencies. You don’t have to take another job, but if there’s a real problem you’ll be prepared. If you’re at work worrying and about cooking dinner when you get home, write down a menu or a list of ingredients.

If you’re worried about a health problem, look up the illness or injury on the Internet, or call your doctor and ask some questions. If you’re worrying about how your presentation will go at work tomorrow, go over your notes and lay out your clothes for the morning.

Here’s an example:
If you’re worried that the roof may leak the next time it rains, start making a list about what you can do about it.
Your inner dialog may sound like this:

”The news said it was going to rain next week. I’m worried that the roof might leak”.
“Call a roofing company and have them look at it”.
“I’m worried that a roofing company will charge me more than they should because I don’t know how much it should cost”.
“Call my brother, (or my neighbor, or my friend) who had his roof done, and ask him what it costs, and also if he liked the contractor he used”.

”Okay”.

When you reach this “okay”, it’s time to make the call, or, if it’s too late at night, make a note to call the next day.

4. Distract Yourself.
When you’ve done what you can, or made your lists or notes, then distract yourself: Get busy doing something else, or read, or take a walk or a bath. Repeat the above steps every time you catch yourself worrying.

How to Overcome the #1 Fatal Mistake in Business and Life

By Kelly Fidel
Many CEOs, business owners and everyday people look for adventure and excitement outside of work that test their fears and abilities to take risk. Why? The Goal, to get past what is called the Freakout Point. The freakout point is when you are so scared, so filled with anxiety that you can hardly breathe. You know that feeling? The sweaty palms, the ringing ears, the rapid heart beat, the bumble bees in your stomach and flat out tears.

Recently, I read that for first-time parachuters that happens when the doors of the airplane open up and you hear all the air and noise and feel the pressure drop. Okay, just the thought of that one gives me sweaty palms. What is amazing and gave me goose bumps aka inspiration is that Hayward Putnan, former CEO of Southwest Airlines calls it the moment of truth and total focus. He says, It really makes you focus at the moment and forget all your other stresses or problems.

How To Overcome the #1 Fatal Mistake - FEAR in life
We have all been there, full of fear, scared at a potential outcome even if you are successful and confident. Seeking the freakout point does not require that you jump from airplanes or climb Mount Everest or speak to a group of 30,000 people, although I did do that one and it was a blast. What simply separate leaders from other talented people is the willingness to go through the freakout point. To just keep moving forward in business as in life. Sometimes this is easier said than done which I can attest to like many of you, although the reward is worth the effort. Everything we do is like a muscle, and it needs to be tested and worked out and put into uncomfortable positions. Recently, I was definately working out with the freakout point. Boy, a trip to the gym would have been easier! Realizing life has no glass ceiling and by putting yourself in uncomfortable situations, the success muscle grows, not shrinks, withers up and dies.

Fear paralyzes most people from reaching their goals and potential. Often times people keep doing things the same way just because they are afraid of change. People understand this intuitively and keep doing things the same way when they know they need to change. Fear is what keeps them from changing and achieving success. Michelle McTiernan, a CFO at DDB Health says I see bright people every day at work who are rigid in their approach. It is a huge barrier to success in a fast moving world. Pushing your limits helps with being comfortable under pressure. This is a great asset for any leader.

The Answer - Make A Decision.
This is the Moment of Truth and Total Focus. Certainly the ability to focus on the task at hand or an immediate threat is a great skill to develop. Yet, perhaps the greatest skill that you can develop by seeking freakout points is to overcome the fear of making a decision. As many successful people will tell you, not making a decision is sometimes more risky than making the wrong decision. In your journey for success it is critical that you conquer your fears of success. Whether you develop this ability by looking for freakout adventures or other means is up to you. The most important thing to remember is to never let fear keep you from reaching you true potential.

Make a decision about your life, your career. If you do not, who will? Do what you love, what lights you up, even if it's not perfect. Because doing nothing, making no decisions, living a life filled with fear and confusion is far worse that discovering the freakout point and living a life with no glass ceiling!

The Qualities of a True Leader

By Tristan Loo
“Leadership is the art of getting someone to do something you want done because he wants to do it.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower

The highly successful people in the world are naturally leaders in their respective fields. If you want to realize any level of success in your own life, then you need to make the commitment towards becoming a leader too. Focus on becoming great at what you love to do in life and then step up to the plate and inspire others to do the same. Leadership is about creating a strong foundation within yourself that is able to support and nurture those that are weaker than you are.

A very important distinction is that a leader is not a title or a position. Kevin Cashman, a leadership coach and the CEO of LeaderSource, says that “Too many people separate the act of leadership from the leader. They see leadership as something that they do, rather than as an expression of who they are.” The difference between someone in the position of power, such as a manager, executive, politician, etc. and a leader is that a positionally-powerful person can get people to do what they want merely because they have the power to levy punishment if their followers don’t comply.

While this can get people to do what they want, it also harbors resentment because it pushes people towards action by the threat of causing pain in their lives. A leader, on the other hand, inspires and motivates their followers to take action on their own volition without creating that negative aura of threat. True leaders possess a passionate and powerful vision of what they want to accomplish and they share that vision with as many people as they can. The title of Manager is simply a position, but that title in itself does not make the person a leader. In reality, the person at the very bottom of the organizational structure can be a leader even in absence of any authority. A leader inspires hope within their followers and it’s that vision of hope that makes a true leader more powerful than any person of authority. This article will describe the important qualities that a person needs to possess in order to be a true passionate leader.

“Before you become a leader, success is all about growing you. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.”
Jack Welch

Be a Visionary
People will only follow a vision that is perfectly clear in their minds, therefore, it’s extremely important that you yourself must possess a crystal clear vision of what you want to accomplish and the direction that you want to go. If your vision is the slightest bit blurry in your mind, then how can you expect to lead people if you don’t know where you are going yourself? You must be able to see the big picture and then develop the plan on how to get there because in order to lead people, you have to keep things simple enough for them to take action on and you must be able to convey your vision to them. Develop a statement of purpose for yourself and for your company if you don’t already have one. Continue to rewrite it each day until it becomes something that you are passionate about and when you speak it out loud, you feel emotionally charged and empowered. Always remember that vague goals will always produce vague results. Share your vision with your team and let them take ownership in that dream by showing them how it can benefit their lives. Remember that people don’t follow other people—they follow the vision that the chosen leader is committed towards. Take any great leader throughout history and study their life and you will undoubtedly see a truly great visionary.

Be Passionate About What You Do
A leader must possess the highest level of passion for their vision in order to inspire those around them with that same level of energy. A leader who does not demonstrate passion for what they’re doing will instead emit a negative energy to their team, which will cause chaos and de-motivation towards their goals. Always be passionate about what you are doing and strive to share that passion with others. Remember the saying, “Energy flows where attention goes.”

Be True to Yourself
Always strive to display the highest degree of integrity that you can. Integrity is simply the act of being the same on the inside as you claim to be on the outside. People want to believe that you practice in your own life what you preach to them. The lack of integrity is the reason why politicians have such a tarnished reputation today because some of them lacked the integrity that people desire from their leaders. Most people fail becoming leaders because they display a poor level of integrity. They put on a false illusion of leadership in front of their team, but after the show is over, when they are away from the spotlight, their personal lives are anything but inspirational. A true leader possesses a strong foundation from within and it’s that foundation which supports the great teams that they build. True leaders must possess the highest level of integrity. Integrity is congruency of actions and intentions—doing what you say and acting the same on the outside as you do on the inside. Leaders are thought focusers. They make the confusing—clear. Therefore, the leader themselves must be polarized towards one focal point or else they will run the risk of confusing their followers and dissolving that focused energy that was once a vision. So follow the age old rule of do what you say and say what you do.

Be Courageous
Rudolph Giuliani once said that a hero is not one who is fearless. A true hero is one who feels the fear and yet moves forward regardless. A leader is a hero who must be strong enough to face their fears of failing, kick it aside, and move forward anyways. Leaders realize not to cover or hide their fear, but rather, they acknowledge it like everyone else, but they also manage their fears rather than allow their fears to manage them. Remember that even the best leaders make mistakes, but what separates the great leaders from the mediocre ones is that the great leaders are willing to admit they made a mistake and they use it as a tool to create a better future for themselves and their team. Mediocre leaders, on the other hand, live in self-deceit and allow their ego to get in the way of doing what’s right for themselves and everyone who follows them. They stand firm in their decision that they’ve made, even when they know that it’s the wrong one and they would rather sink with the ship and take their team with them, rather than admit a mistake. The fear of failure is something that holds 90% of people from achieving their maximum potential in life. A true leader is one who makes a decision and moves forwards and sees failures not as failures, but as lessons for their future success.

Be Action-Oriented
The universe doesn’t reward people for what they know, it rewards people for what they do and leaders are doers. Leaders are geared towards taking action and they realize that for a team to come together, it requires moving from potential to action. The decision is yours to make. While making a decision might lead towards failure, the act of failing to make a decision will absolutely guarantee failure. It’s important to remember that leaders rarely have 100% of the information needed to make an informed decision. Those leaders who wait until they have all the information before they act, usually act too late. A true leader is intuitive and listens to their “gut instincts” because it usually gives them the right answer when uncertainty exists.

Be a Builder of Outstanding Teams
In any team sport, it’s not always the case where the team with the best players win. Exceptionally talented players are important, but it’s not as important as how those players work as a collective whole, as a single and powerful unified force. Therefore, it stands to reason that most of your time as a leader needs to be committed towards selecting, evaluating, coaching and strategically placing your players. As a leader, you must be a great team-builder because if people don’t work together on a common goal, then that mission will ultimately fail. Realize that the people that you have on your team won’t simply come together on their own. They need someone who can organize them into an efficient team. A great leader knows the importance of having a team comprised of the right mix of individuals with different and varying strengths and weaknesses and the strategic placement of these individuals on the playing field that will fully utilize their strengths, while minimizing any weaknesses.

Be a Role-Model
Over 80% of what people learn is from what they observe from other people. As a leader, people will be focusing on your life, both professionally and personally, as an example of how to act themselves. If you want to see your team with exceptional personal qualities that you admire, then make sure that you yourself are demonstrating those same qualities. Your followers will mirror back the qualtities that you display towards them. A true leader is committed towards serving their team and does what’s necessary to push the team closer to that ultimate vision. Along the same note, a leader must never complain in front of their team because that shows a lack of direction. A chain-of-command management philosophy I learned in the police force was that criticism should always go up the chain of command, while praise should always go downwards. An officer never gripes to his troops, he gripes to his superiors, while patting his troops on the back for doing a job well done.

Be a Learner
Leaders are learners. Our wisdom for making the right decisions is shaped and molded by our experiences in life. Leaders not only immerse themselves into experiencing as much as they can throughout life, but they also learn from the wisdom of other people as a way to leverage the time that they have. We can learn from our own mistakes and accomplishments, but we can also learn from the mistakes of others as well and it’s for this reason that leaders must be learners. Strive to maximize your own personal development by taking courses, reading books, listening to audio programs and immersing yourself into something new that will cause personal growth to happen. Leaders by their very nature have almost an obsession with personal growth because it’s from wisdom and experience that produces a higher quality decision.

Be a Great Communicator
Great leaders know how to communicate to their team effectively. They know how to deliver their message in a way that will create a lasting impact on the people who are listening to them. A great leader will also listen to the people that follow them. Through communication, leaders can convey specific goals and instructions to their followers. Leaders are listeners. I’ve known many bosses out there in the world that really haven’t grasped the ability to listen effectively. They are too busy thinking about what to say next, that they fail to grasp the valuable feedback and ideas that are given to them. Remember that consequences, both positive and negative, require actions and actions require decisions and decisions require an effective exchange of communication. Poor communication almost always results in a poor decision and the end result is a very poor consequence because of it.

Be Competent
A major component of trust is competence. To be a great leader, you have maintain a level of proficiency at what you do. To often, skilled people rise up the promotional ranks into a management position and they inevitably fail because they are no longer handling the technical aspects of the department that they were so good at before and instead, their have assumed a position that demands a whole new type of intelligence—interpersonal intelligence—the ability to interact well with others. A great leader is not only competent at the technical portion of things, but they are also competent at interacting with others. Strive to develop both to become a great leader.

Be Compassionate
People in the position of power often forget simple manners when it comes to delegating responsibilities to their subordinates. A great leader is respectful at all times and follows the platinum rule of giving all people unconditional love and acceptance regardless of whether they deserve it or whether they want it. It’s sometimes too easy to allow positional power to go to one’s head and when that happens, that person is no longer a leader, but instead a dictator. A genuine leader is one who is compassionate towards others. They have the power of empathizing with all people and understanding how they might feel. A false leader, on the other hand, does not empathize with their people, but instead makes decisions based on what they want or what is popular or what is good for them. The greatest leaders display the quality of unconditional love. Unconditional love is the love of all people without reservation and without having them demonstrate behaviors that you want them to. Unconditional love helps the leader put aside their wants and allows them to see what is good for other people. A compassionate leader also knows that they are not above anyone else and does not treat others as if they were. They understand that they simply have a role to fulfill just as other people do and they always treat others with respect and dignity at all times.

Be Intuitive
In my experience, all the outstanding leaders I’ve known have a very keen sense of intuition. They listen to their “gut” feeling and are sensitive to when their body is telling them that something feels bad or doesn’t sit well with them and they don’t ignore it. Leaders combine their gut feeling with their experience to avoid the pitfalls that sometimes open up underneath an organization at any time. It’s the intuitive nature of a leader that enables them to balance the information given to him by the “experts” with what feels right inside. While experts can give a lot of useful information, they are usually more resources of data than pragmatics and usually wither and die out on the battlefield of reality.

Be a Mentor
A great leader does not only see people as they are, they see people as how they could be. A dictator holds his people down and prevents growth, while a leader knows the value of developing his people and enhancing their potential. A true leader encourages his team to take on new responsibilities and to grow and learn because that investment in the personal growth of their team will pay off substantially in the future.

Be Willing to Celebrate
Many managers get caught up with trying to be professional by not celebrating enough. Celebration delivers positive energy and recognition to their teams for an effort well-done. Make a big deal about achievements as if your team had just won the Super Bowl or the World Cup. Celebrations are an important tool for motivation.

Conclusion
The path towards living a life of significance demands that you become an exceptional leader. Start working on building your leadership qualities as I have outlined here and never stop building on those skills for the rest of your living days. The better a leader you become, the more people will hear and follow your message and the greater positive change you can influence on the world as part of your legacy. As Major General Perry M. Smith (Ret. USAF) once said, “All leaders must work hard to build the future, for that is where they and their people will spend the rest of their lives.”

Cerita Dari Seorang Kawan

Seberapa Besar Harga Diri Kita?

1+1=5 or more......Oh my goodness...

Have a nice day my friends,Wish you luck for taking decision.

Have a nice day...

The Faithful.....

Be an Entrepreneur is mandatory. Don't miss it....

Wish you luck....

Misteri Kehidupan.....

Jika William Shakespeare masih hidup pasti dia akan menarik kata-katanya:"What's in a name? That which we call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet"Apalah arti sebuah nama?...mmm..mungkin populasi pada saat itu masih sedikit dan perkembangannya kemajuan jaman belum sedashyat setelah era Revolusi Industri di Inggris.
Wish you luck...

Cara Membantu Meningkatkan KUALITAS ENTREPRENEURSHIP Kita…

Salam Luar Biasa Prima!
